Trauma Therapy
Individual trauma therapy uses the EMDR protocol to support you on your unique healing journey. At Mindful Parent Clinic, you will be met exactly where you are. Together, we will focus on building practical coping skills, developing internal resources, and crafting a collaborative treatment plan that honors your lived experiences.
What is EMDR?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. While it sounds highly technical, the core concept is beautifully straightforward: it helps your brain naturally digest stuck memories.
Think of your brain like a computer that files everyday memories into "digital folders" while you sleep. When you experience something highly stressful or traumatic, that filing system gets overwhelmed. Instead of being processed and archived, the memory gets trapped in your active working memory—fully loaded with the original raw emotions, negative thoughts, and physical sensations. This is why a memory from years ago can still cause your heart to race today; your brain genuinely feels like it is still happening.
How It Works
During an EMDR session, you will briefly focus on a specific, difficult memory while your therapist guides your eyes back and forth (usually by following a moving light, a finger, or using rhythmic tapping sounds). This gentle left-right movement is called bilateral stimulation.
This process mimics what your brain naturally does during REM (deep) sleep. It jumpstarts your natural healing process, allowing your brain to finally move that painful memory into a "past history" folder. The memory itself doesn’t disappear, but the emotional sting and physical distress fade away, leaving you feeling calm, safe, and back in control.
A Collaborative, Whole-Person Approach
Meeting you where you are means deeply understanding how early experiences, and the meaning we make out of them, shape who we are today. Using a compassionate, whole-person framework, we will tailor the EMDR process to your specific pacing, comfort level, and personal goals.
